Nicodemus was an old prophet in The Secret of NIMH. He was the wise, mystical leader of the rats until Jenner killed him. Derek Jacobi did his voice who would later go on to play The Master from Doctor Who.

Secret of NIMH:

In the first movie, Nicodemus appears as the ancient and wise leader of the rats and is highly respected by all but one, Jenner. He is seen writing Jonathan Brisby great deeds as well as his obituary and then again watching over Mrs. Brisby, willing her to visit The Great Owl in the first place. Soon he meets Mrs. Brisby face-to-face. She looks for him and visits him in his study to ask for help. In this scene, Nicodemus reveals the truth about Jonathan Brisby, Mr. Ages, and informs Mrs. Brisby of their former lives spent at The National Institute Of Mental Health. Afterwards, he gives her the Amulet, and recruits her to his faction in exchange for moving of The Brisby Family's Winter Home.

Nicodemus is assassinated by Jenner. He and Sullivan plan to cut the ropes the moment it is hoisted over Nicodemus. Sullivan backs out in the last minute while Jenner cuts his area anyways. Very large chunks of debris collided into Nicodemus.

Nicodemus's demise hits every one of the rats very hard, even more so to Mr. Ages and Justin. Jenner, however, shows no regret but pretends to show remorse. If they continue to listen to Nicodemus's "Freedom At Any Cost", they would have been exterminated.

As Mrs. Jonathan Brisby gains clout in the faction, Jenner decides to assassinate her as well. He is stopped by Justin and Sullivan, while the final scene featuring Nicodemus inside the Amulet. It is possible that Nicodemus lives on in some other way. However, it is apparent that he was grieving for Jonathan, who sacrificed his life rather than outlive his wife. It is possible that Nicodemus was more upset about the loss more than Mrs. Brisby herself.

Trivia:

Differences in the book and film:

• In the book, Nicodemus was not old at all. He was very young, not that much different from Jenner. He wore an eye-patch over one eye and had a more prideful air about him.

• In the film, Nicodemus is grand. However, the eye problem is given to Dragon.
